Some Prospecting Videos from Years Ago
Thu Sep 15, 2022 1:24 pm
Continuing the series from the former Finders Forum:
Legendary Victorian prospector the late Jim Stewart digging and reminiscing about gold (around the mid 90's)
None this time though, from memory it was a square brass object with Chinese writing.
Copied from old HI8 videotape filmed at Fortunate Gully, Rheola VIC.
With property owner the late Ken Leach and prospector Johnny Morley.

Let's not forget that bugs slammed the door in Jim's face not long before he died. Jim was a top bloke whereas bugs is a pathetic excuse for a human being.

5 oz and 30 oz found at depth in tertiary cement with Jim Stewarts 36" "Bismarck" coil mid 90's.
Copied from HI8 video. Note the root like supergene growth marks on the 30 oz piece with some ancient scratch marks. Unfortunately, the modern "ding" marks were caused while chipping it out in the dark.

No way that was detected!!!!
Photo shopped as well as you can see the circle out line just a tad fuzzy, typical of a cut and paste job into a existing pic.
P.S Right Click on the gold pic and hold, you can move the square that he cut out, talk about amateur hour.

That specimen may be pretty tiny Halfie, seems highly magnified to me
Inspired by Jim Stewarts "Bismarck" coil, prospector John Hider Smith built his own 36" monoloop.
Unlike the bundle wound "Bismarck" (and years before they became well known) this coil was flat wound and also found a lot of big gold. Exactly how much it found is unknown since John always played his cards close to his chest but I know for certain it found yet another 30 oz piece at Guy's Rush and many kilo's near Wychitella-
Unlike the shoulder mounted "Bismarck" John's system hooked onto his belt to carry the weight.
NB: This particular coil was recently sent to Ilya at X Coils by Reg and myself.

Some fond memories of the late Jim Stewart struggling to erect his tent on a prospecting trip near Broken Hill, mid 90's.
We were following up on rumours of a big gold find somewhere in the general area, but we only found what Paddy shot at -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWvhEVhtxr4
With prospectors Johnny Morley, Steve (surname forgotten) and Tony Honey
Copied from HI8 videotape
Edit: As it turned out, we were almost in the right place but too far east-
Large quantities of detectable gold were later discovered on nearby Kayrunnera station, and the whole area is now currently being explored by Koonenberry Gold with the potential to become a major new Stawell like goldfield:

Doze and detect on my MRC at Billy Goat Gully, Kingower Victoria Australia 1990 Part 1
Copied from old VHSC video tape, this shaky amateur video captures some of the excitement of gold detecting in earlier times.
Ignore the fade out midway, it continues-
Featuring John Hider Smith (dark hair) Ian Jacques (blonde hair) and his ex military International TD15 dozer. The big detector coils are on Minelab SD 2000 prototypes under test:

Doze and detect at my MRC claim at Billy Goat Gully, Kingower 1990. Part 2
Copied from old VHSC video tape, this shaky amateur video captures some of the excitement of gold detecting in earlier times. The first colour weighed in at 5 oz troy and the second (on Ian's knee) weighed 6 oz.
Featuring John Hider Smith (dark hair) Ian Jacques and James Beatty (red shirt)

Thanks PP
Sadly, that is pretty much all the old relevant prospecting tape I have.
I'll finish up with the 42 oz piece that (sadly) wasn't left for "Litigation Larry" to find in the Bendigo Whipstick
Detected almost on the surface in Scotsman's Gully and featuring partner Meg:
